Two people are hospitalized after being shot Tuesday morning in the Highland Hills neighborhood of south Dallas.
According to Dallas police, officers were dispatched to a shooting incident along the 3900 block of Happy Canyon Drive around 7:30 a.m. When officers arrived, they found a man who had been shot by someone and a teenager. I found a boy.
Justin Preites, 16, told NBC 5/Telemundo 39 that a female neighbor was being assaulted by her son and that at least one other person tried to intervene.
Preites said the man stopped attacking his mother and left in a rage, but then threatened to return with a gun.
“He was on top of his mother. My family took him away. He started hitting people,” Preites said. “They started pushing him around and grabbing him. But then he started hitting everyone. He started hitting us.”
After several minutes, the man returned with a weapon and began firing at the car and the family's home, Preites said. Preites said his 13-year-old brother was shot twice, once in his hand and arm, and once in the leg.
“I heard two things. I heard two loud bangs,” he said. “He shot the house. There's one, two, three holes. And there's three more inside.”
Preites' father told NBC 5/T39 that the teenager is scheduled to undergo surgery Tuesday afternoon. His current condition is unknown. Another injured person was Omar, a 21-year-old resident who was shot in the leg, Preites said.
After further investigation, DPD identified the suspect as 25-year-old Marlon Perkins. Perkins was arrested and charged with two counts of aggravated assault, possession of a controlled substance, deadly force, unlawful possession of a firearm and robbery assault.
Tomisha Walker, a longtime area resident, told NBC 5 she was out for her morning walk at the time and may have been near the line of fire.
“A lot of people wouldn't have intervened,” Walker said. “It was just someone seeing someone in need and helping them. And it took a toll on them.”
Police say the shooting was an isolated incident but have not confirmed any other details about what happened.
An investigation into the shooting is ongoing.
