The Dallas Mavericks scored 60 points in the paint in a 127-92 blowout win over the Chicago Bulls on Monday night, extending their winning streak to three games. The Mavericks did a great job of diagnosing mismatches and making extra passes all night, followed by a number of easy baskets to Daniel Gafford and Derek Lively II.
Gafford and Lively II were great on both sides of the ball all night, with the big man tandem combining for 42 points, 14 rebounds, and 4 blocks on the night. This game further proved that Dallas should give opposing teams a repertoire of rim running and rim protection rather than playing small ball, but it was also one of the most surprising developments of the season for the Mavericks. They became one.
With Daniel Gafford going 9-9 from the field in the Dallas-Chicago game, Gafford has now made 28 consecutive field goals, and the big man has made a field goal in his last four games with Dallas. It's perfectly decided.
This record is literally historic, as Gafford is seven attempts shy of tying Wilt Chamberlain's 1966-67 NBA record for consecutive field goals, which was set with 35 consecutive field goals.
Part of Gafford's winning streak can be attributed to his style of play, but given that he primarily scores at the rim in pick-and-rolls, offensive rebounds, or seal-off scenarios, it's possible that some of Gafford's winning streak can be attributed to his playing style That winning streak doesn't make it any less impressive. Considering that no player has even made 28 consecutive field goals since before the NBA started tracking various statistics in the 1996-97 season.
Gafford has been consistent with both teams regardless of playing time since arriving in Dallas, and his fun-loving attitude and work ethic make him a perfect fit in the locker room.
“I tell people all the accolades about my name are good for me, but at the end of the day, I just want to win, I just want to compete, I just want to go out and have fun.”
– Daniel Gafford
Even more impressive than Gafford's individual accomplishments may be his selfless approach to the game. He's focused on winning and doing everything the Mavericks need him to do every night. Gafford has a chance to match Chamberlain's record in the Mavericks' next game against the Golden State Warriors on Wednesday night, but even if he falls short of the historic mark, his individual talent will be undervalued. Shouldn't.
