The Cowboys are in the midst of conducting dozens of formal and informal interviews with prospects in Indianapolis throughout this week, which McCray called an important part of the draft process.
“This is a big thing for us because we've spent a lot of time gathering information and asking people about it. Now we can add their own reasoning and help them “Now we can sit down and have a discussion,” he said. “Our coaches are here and can determine which players are a good fit in terms of character, work ethic and everything else.”
Head coach Mike McCarthy and new defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer have returned to Dallas to continue building a new defense, and all of their interviews are available on video. For Zimmer, his personnel vision is manifested in the scouting process by McCray and his staff to find players who fit his mold.
“Once we start this process, it's going to be a slightly different plan than we've had in the past,” McCray said. “We’re looking for big, athletic football players. We’re looking for players with those little nuances. [Mike Zimmer] I have it. It was great for us to be able to spend time with the coaches and hear them talk and communicate with the players and get a better feel for what it's all about. . ”
“I think we're probably going to focus more on big bodies on the inside to stop that. We're always looking at linebacker. That's a position we have to play in free agency and in the draft.” Please take a look as I would like to add more players to it. ”
On the offensive side of the ball, finding ways to improve the run game has been a focus of the offseason as McCray and his scouting department focus on what they want from the draft class.
“Number one, they have to be able to run the football, and then it's how well they capture things,” he said. “We're looking at it from a measurement standpoint, and there are different types of backs out there, and do they fit into our system? That's very important, but more importantly, the holes in them. He is a player who can open things up.”
This process will continue into the weekend as McCray and his staff continue to directly evaluate the personality and skill set of each prospect on the draft board.
“We want to find out who the man is,” he said. “We bring them in and ask them what they do and see if they can learn about us in that short amount of time and really want to know what they're about. There are some guys that come into the room. “You can see right away that there's a dynamic personality. The best thing about this game is getting to know the players.''
