There is a fairly general consensus on what, if not who, the Dallas Cowboys will select in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft.
For example, in Mel Kiper's first three mock drafts with ESPN, the Cowboys selected an offensive lineman — even though it was a different lineman each time.
But in his fourth mock (second-round version) released Tuesday, Kiper reiterated for the first time that the Cowboys will select Oklahoma's Tyler Guyton with the 24th overall pick.
Kiper on the pick: “This has to be a tackle, right? Tyron Smith is gone and 2022 first-round pick Tyler Smith has played very well at left guard. Would I move Smith out and risk an above-average left tackle? If I were a general manager, I'd run Guyton, who is one of the most physical players in this class. 6~ At 7 years old and 322 pounds, he moves like a tight end. He primarily played right tackle in college, but could be moved to Dak Prescott's blindside with the Cowboys.
In the second round, Kiper kept some familiar faces, but turned to the other half of the Red River Rivalry, selecting Texas running back Jonathon Brooks with the 56th overall pick to Dallas.
“This is a popular combination based on Dallas' offseason running back scheme,” Kiper said. “[Dallas] There are no leads on the roster. Brooks, who rushed for 1,139 yards and 10 touchdowns before tearing his ACL in November, has the tools to be an impact player as a rookie. He also showed good qualities as a pass catcher. He's my top ranked back. ”
Brooks' knee surgery was performed by Cowboys team physician Dr. Dan Cooper. So there's history between the two, and Dallas may know better than anyone the state of the former Longhorns star's knee on draft night.
The draft is scheduled to be held in Detroit from Thursday, April 25th to Saturday, April 27th.
