The Dallas Cowboys will retain head coach Mike McCarthy for the 2024 NFL season, despite rumors of a coaching change following the team's blowout playoff loss on Sunday.
McCarthy's future with the organization came into question after the Cowboys lost 48-32 at home to the young and inexperienced Green Bay Packers.
However, Dallas owner Jerry Jones released a statement on Wednesday explaining that McCarthy will return to the team next season.
“We believe this team is very close and capable of achieving our ultimate goals, and having Mike McCarthy as our head coach will be the best step forward for us,” Jones said. “There are great benefits to continuing the progress of our team under Mike's leadership as head coach.
“This season in particular, a lot of success has come as a result of Mike's approach leading the team, both with individual players and the team as a whole. Mike is the most successful head coach in Cowboys history. He has a regular season winning percentage and we're focused on working with him to translate that into postseason goals.
“Certainly, Mike's career has demonstrated a high level of success in the postseason, and we have great confidence that that can continue.”
Next season will be McCarthy's fifth year with the Cowboys and the final year of his current contract with America's Team.
He compiled a 42-25 record in his four years as the Cowboys' head coach, including three consecutive 12-win seasons.
However, Dallas struggled in the playoffs during his time at Texas, losing three times and winning only once in the postseason.

The playoff loss continues the storied organization's postseason shortcomings, and the 60-year-old becomes Dallas' head coach for the sixth consecutive year since Barry Switzer in 1995, leading the Cowboys to the division. I couldn't get past the round.
That trend continued in the loss to the Packers over the weekend, as Dallas, which had been dominant in the regular season, failed on every front, resulting in a convincing loss.
Jones emphasized that Sunday's loss affected not just McCarthy but the entire Cowboys organization.
“Our players. Our coaches. Our front office. ourselves. We're accountable for our results. I'm accountable for our results,” he said. “The lens we use to view and evaluate Coach McCarthy is holistic.
“While we are all disappointed in Sunday's result and playoff performance, I support him 100 percent as head coach and his ability to accomplish his goals.
“We will begin the review and decision-making process on everything that impacts our team and roster, and while we do not intend to address specific players, contract extensions or free agents at this time, it is our top priority. It’s worth deep consideration and consideration. You can get it.”
