WICHITA FALLS, Texas (KAUZ) – A sociology professor at Texas State University, MSU, wants to educate the community on how to increase social consciousness.
Dr. Wesley Cohoon (Ph.D., D.min., .CCS) talks about the podcast he created that he hopes will change the way we perceive certain behaviors.
After learning that sociology would no longer be a graduation requirement at some universities, Dr. Cohoon started the podcast “As A Matter of Interact” in hopes that his teachings would reach beyond the Mustang community. I made it.
“The title of today's podcast is 'Dealing with Problems Socially.' First, we're going to explore selection using something called a Manifest in Lament Functions. ” Cohoon said on episode 1 of the podcast.
Dr. Cohoon said being a sociologist means educating others about your field of study.
“I haven't been in academia all my life, this is my third or fourth career. I always tell my students: I've used sociology everywhere I've interacted with people. So I thought and realized that sociologists only write to other sociologists. There seems to be a lot of unknown ignorance about sociologists, and even the students who come to my class don't know much about sociology. I don’t even know what it is,” he said.
He started his podcast in February. What is his goal? To make the lessons more practical, like in his classroom.
“I'm a pretty laid-back type of person, so I don't use a lot of vocabulary or jargon,” he said.
Make it easy for listeners to understand.
“Specifically, what I try to do in my podcast and in my classes is help others understand their worldview. People generally want the same thing, but… You can make people think, “Okay, I respect you as a human being, but I don't agree with you.” he added.
“Because the problem becomes continuous and harmful. You stop looking for solutions and start to develop tunnel vision, focusing on a single thing to the exclusion of everything else.” And you start thinking about whether the world revolves around you being right and the other person being wrong,” Cohoon said in episode 1 of the podcast.
“Often people focus on intentions, but as a social scientist I think that's the wrong focus. Whether your intentions are x, y, or z, It doesn't matter what happened. That means you become more socially conscious and aware of other people's lived experiences,” he said.
Although the project started just two months ago, Dr. Cohoon has already created a year's worth of material for the podcast. He believes that spending time each day educating others helps create a kinder community.
