WASHINGTON (June 27, 2023) – The National Association of Realtors® releases new research revealing that Americans who live in walkable communities report a higher quality of life. The 2023 Community and Transportation Preferences Survey is a national poll conducted every three years to assess people's biases about the location or potential location of their home and the community attributes they find desirable .
“With COVID-19 in the rearview mirror, this study shows that walkability continues to be a huge demand for Americans of all ages,” said NAR President Kenny Purcell. . “For more than 20 years, NAR has conducted community preference research, providing real estate agents and their communities with valuable information about America's changing lifestyles and migration trends. To help improve places, NAR created this survey and the results are available to everyone.”

- 79% said being within walking distance of other places and things, such as stores and parks, is very or somewhat important to them. Of those, he said, 78% said they would be willing to pay more to live in a walkable community.
- 85% said sidewalks and walking areas are very/somewhat important.
- 65% said having public transportation nearby is very or somewhat important.
- 56% said they preferred a home with a small yard and walkability, while 44% said they had a large yard and needed to drive to most places.
- 53% prefer attached housing (owning or renting a townhouse/condo/apartment) and want to be able to walk to shops and restaurants and have a short commute.
