If you've ever wondered how route creation and ride mapping work, you'll love this episode.
My guest is Eric Semianczuk, co-founder of Sherpa Map. We’re guessing you haven’t heard of it…yet.
But the cycling route map service they're building is incredible, using AI and detailed LIDAR data that brings together weather, surface type, and elevation data to make it the most sophisticated imaginable. Create route data.
And they keep improving it. In this episode, learn how Eric got started, how mapping and route building works, and how he uses AI to predict everything from the type of road surface to the number of calories you need and advise you on tire selection. I will explain. your next race.

Above are some of my local mountain bike trails mapped onto a Sherpa map. Color coding indicates elevation changes and helps you see where high spots are on your route. You can also import GPX files created from previous rides or elsewhere, and that data will be displayed.
By combining LIDAR with satellite and other publicly available data, Sherpa Map builds the most detailed terrain maps for cyclists. What about details? Roads are color-coded by surface type, you can see wind speed, elevation and slope, and you can upload your driving data from your friends and competitors to see how they compare and where to attack. Masu. The whole thing is impressive. Kudos, Eric, and keep up the good work!
