Impact performance reporting standards

Impact Frontiers' Impact Performance Reporting Standards establish common expectations for the reporting of impact results by private market asset managers. These are the result of an 18-month public consultation with over 350 asset managers, asset owners and allocators, consultants, and assurance and verification providers.

The goals of the reporting code are:

  • Facilitate the flow of information about impacts experienced by stakeholders and the natural environment to inform investor decision-making.
  • To make report creation less troublesome for asset managers who create reports, and more convenient for asset owners and allocators who receive reports.
  • To provide a set of non-proprietary criteria by which independent reviewers can vouch for or verify a report.and
  • Provide market-tested prototypes for future regulatory disclosure standards.

The Reporting Code addresses gaps in the set of impact standards, frameworks and guidance already used by investors. These are designed to guide the production of impact performance reports that fund managers share privately with capital providers under non-disclosure agreements. This facilitates the reporting of both positive and negative information, including information that cannot be shared publicly. They may also guide the preparation of public reports, recognizing that sensitive information may need to be excluded.

An important conclusion is that standard KPIs are often not a perfect fit. A good KPI is one that investors trust to be a true and valid indicator of the impact you are trying to create, and one that the stakeholders experiencing that impact say is important to them.

These are the kinds of KPIs that you feel justified in making (investment) decisions for and managing as an organization. Standardization only makes sense if there is general agreement about what should be measured and what the concepts underlying the various indicators are.

Achieving a balance of standardized and comparable KPIs, supported by standardized and comparable concepts, will be the next evolution of impact management.
