The NFL draft will take place later this month. In this series, dallas cowboys He's at every position as the team prepares to make a selection in Detroit. The first one is quarterback.
Quarterback is not a priority for the Cowboys in this draft.
Far from it.
This has nothing to do with the discussion about Dak Prescott and his contract extension and the merits/necessity of extending his contract. This is relevant to this season and this draft.
In that context, the club could get away with not drafting a quarterback. Remember, Dallas already sent a 2024 fourth-round pick to San Francisco for Trey Lance. Over the next few months, the focus will be on Lance's development after Prescott and Cooper Rush, with the team failing to acquire a quarterback to join the team late in the draft.
Using a draft pick on a quarterback is highly unlikely. But even if the Cowboys decide to take a flyer, it's hard to imagine it coming before the final round.
players on the roster
Dak Prescott: Has been selected to three Pro Bowls at this stage of his career. More are in development.
Cooper Rush: Nothing fancy. But a good, solid backup who knows the system and where the ball goes.
Trey Lance: He is the No. 3 overall pick in 2021, but has yet to live up to his draft promise. The Cowboys believe there's still time.
Strengths
Prescott hasn't led the Cowboys to a Super Bowl. He's not the most decorated or successful quarterback in franchise history. These capes belong to Roger Staubach and Troy Aikman. But he did something neither of them had ever done.
Prescott threw 36 touchdown passes, becoming the first quarterback in club history to outright lead the NFL in touchdown throws in a single season. Last season, he completed 69.5 percent of his passes for 4,516 yards and only nine interceptions. His quarterback rating of 105.9 was second in the league.
Prescott has a 32-8 record in NFC East play since entering the league.
Last season, Rush threw just 24 passes as Prescott stayed healthy. But he showed his worth over the past two seasons, leading the Cowboys to a 5-1 record in Prescott's absence.
And what about Lance? This past season was all about learning the language and helping out on the scout team. For him, this will be a crucial offseason that will determine whether he has a career with the Cowboys.
Weakness
Prescott proved he can win during the regular season.
He hasn't translated that success into the postseason.
Prescott has a 2-5 record in the playoffs, but has not been able to lead the Cowboys past the divisional round. The last two games they lost to San Francisco in the playoffs, they started off badly.
That's where he has to improve.
3 draft targets
Carter Bradley, South Alabama: Production increased throughout his career. Son of former Jacksonville head coach and current Indianapolis defensive coordinator Gus Bradley.
Kedon Slovis, BYU: Three different college teams finished with records of 28 wins and 17 losses. At the combine, he recorded a time of 4.55 in the 40 second range.
Devin Leary, Kentucky: The Wildcats threw 23 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. Quick release and good footwork.
conclusion
The Cowboys are starting a top-10 player at the position, with veteran backups who have proven they can step in and win when needed, and young players who are developing. This is not a position that ranks high on the club's draft radar.
