- A steamy, hypnotic journey through all types of club music.
- If Bitter Babe were a perfume, her scent would be animalistic. Heavy musk, bergamot, worn leather, and burnt spice. Born in Bogota, raised in Miami, and now based in Berlin, the artist creates heady, hyper-rhythmic sounds that feel like they were made for sweltering summer nights and wild fantasies. have. Combining a pan-Latin style with hard drums and industrial touches, she created the singular mood that defines her DJing and production: a hazy, high-energy, sensual atmosphere. Bitter Babe's rise on the international circuit is tied to her role in Miami's electronic renaissance. Whether protoreggaetón, dense ambient, or guaracha, her sets and her work are characterized by evocative low-end, sharp synths and distorted frequencies that exude drama. With her releases in TraTraTrax, Air Texture, and SVBKVLT, she has established herself as an experimentalist, leaving the door open to further deconstruction and abstraction. As co-founder of the interdisciplinary project LATITUDES, Bitter Babe aims to unify Latin America's electronic music community. Her mixes are a great source for discovering unknown artists from countries such as Peru and Brazil, some of which are featured on her albums. R.A. Podcast. Starting with subbie downtempo, it moves through swampy Vail funk, Denbou's technoid mutations, and sassy UKG, showcasing her expertise in trippy yet deeply kinetic grooves.
What have you been up to lately?
I've been back home in Colombia for about a month and a half, detoxing from social media, spending a lot of time with my family and myself, and finally having time to work on the music that's come to light in this first half. In addition to that, I watched a lot of movies, read a lot of books, and trained my body.
Where and how was the mix recorded? And can you tell us the idea behind it?
This mix was recorded at a DJ studio (Ross Rec) in Bogotá using three Pioneer CDJs and a Pioneer mixer. There were some changes from the initial idea. In the end, without the pressure of having a dance floor in front of you, you can concentrate on how your music intertwines, show off your sound, and basically just enjoy the ride without rushing anywhere. I decided that I wanted to enjoy it. I would be happy if you could listen to it while running, hiking, or driving wherever you go.
What club or party had a big influence on you as an artist?
From the early days in my hometown, there were two clubs that no longer exist. Baum is where I first started playing, and the other is Villares Londres. Probably one of the best designed clubs to have ever existed, and where my love for all of this began. Also, I will always treasure the opportunity to play for De School, which has been my favorite club for a long time. And I know it's not a club or a party, but playing with friends in a packed greenhouse tent in Dekmantel is something I always dream of.
More broadly, Latin American club music is more popular around the world than ever before. Why do you think that is?
I don't know the exact reason, but I think timing played a big role. Clubs have evolved to be more open and accepting of different sounds. It helped create a space where music that had been around for years could finally be heard. Whatever the reason, I'm glad the focus has changed a bit from an exclusively northern and Eurocentric vision, but I think in this case popularity means little if it doesn't translate into actual support for the region. I would like to see more Latin American artists tour the world. Booking is the easiest way to support them. I would also like to see agencies take a chance on and sign artists from the region. I have been fortunate to have been able to live overseas and build my career with opportunities that would be extremely difficult to obtain locally. But recently I was talking to Entrañas, a friend and one of my favorite producers from Ecuador, and he expressed how far away the idea of touring Europe is for him. was doing. Yes, government things like passports are involved, but also small tools and opportunities from people and organizations that can make a difference in Europe.
What social or political cause would you like the world to pay more attention to?
In the world we live in now, where human rights are violated and deprived before our eyes every day, it is impossible not to choose this as our main human right. Another personal thing for me is the welfare of animals and nature. I would like to see more efforts to promote their well-being and protection. The same goes for water. We need to pay more attention to this resource that nature provides us and be more responsible for its use.
What are you looking forward to in the near future?
Releasing new music, returning to tour, meeting friends from all over the world, visiting new places, and discovering new forms of inspiration. I will also be starting my own series of parties this year and am looking forward to introducing some of my favorite artists. But most importantly, it's the unknowns that are yet to come.
