In the wee hours of Wednesday, an ambulance driver, who was ferrying an accident victim to NIMHANS, was allegedly blocked, chased and harassed for around 12 km by a 43-year-old real estate agent.
The suspect, Gururaj Rao, a resident of Halasuru, was also said to have hurled abusive language at the police and created a disturbance at the police station when he was detained for obstructing the passage of an ambulance.
Police later found that Gururaj was mentally unstable and intoxicated on his way home after attending a relative’s funeral in Tumakuru.
According to police, the ambulance driver, Kumar, was rushing to the scene to rescue an accident victim, identified as Shivaraj, at Madhugiri Gate in Tumakuru when the vehicle rushed to rescue the seriously injured and bleeding patient around 3 am.
When the ambulance reached Yeshwantpur, Gururaj, who was passing by, started shouting at it for road rage and tried to block the road. The ambulance driver managed to go ahead but Gururaj became enraged and chased the ambulance, trying to block the road while yelling abuse at it and threatening the driver with serious consequences if he stopped.
With very little time remaining, the driver managed to reach Wilson Garden Police Station and sought police help to save themselves from the unruly car driver, by which time Gururaj had reached the police station and was also allegedly behaving inappropriately towards the police.
Police arrested Gururaj and impounded his car so that an ambulance could be taken to Nimhans Hospital. At the police station, he allegedly created a disturbance, threatened police officers with serious consequences and refused to take a breathalyzer test.
The accused have been arrested under Sections 353 (assault or use of criminal force on person in the discharge of public servant’s duties) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code and have been remanded in judicial custody.
