Thoothukudi: The family of a real estate agent who allegedly committed suicide recently over Kantuvatti agreed to collect the body on Monday as the police assured that strict action would be taken against the moneylenders. Earlier in the day, the family staged a protest in front of the Kovilpatti RDO office but dispersed after being appeased by DSP Venkatesh.
Sources said Arumugampandian (45), a resident of Veeravanshinagar, is a real estate agent and had borrowed money worth Rs 1.34 billion from around 14 people. Since his interest amounted to hundreds of thousands of yen, he was unable to repay the loan, so he cleared his principal and stopped making payments. Arumugapandian filed a complaint with Kovilpatti West Police on August 28, 2023 and January 25, 2023 as the loan sharks allegedly tortured him to make him repay the money, but to no avail. Ta. According to sources, the police also insisted that they return the money as they had promised.
Arumugapandian's family alleges that police worked with moneylenders to remove bank checks and land documents. On January 25, Arumugapandi took the extreme step and died at Thoothokudi Medical College Hospital on Saturday.
The victim's wife Chitra said moneylenders frequently visited her home and issued death threats. She accused police of indifference and connivance with moneylenders. Chitra along with her family staged a protest on Monday. Police handed over land documents and bank details to Chitra during peace talks, while Kovilpatti DSP Venkatesh assured action against usurers. In response, the protesters dispersed and agreed to accept the bodies.
