If you're into hair care (and beauty for that matter), you may have come across Crown Affair. As the founder and CEO of a popular hair care brand, Deanna Cohen was on a mission to provide ritual-based, mindful hair care. Launched in 2020, Crown Her Affair started with just four products: a towel, a brush, an oil, and a comb. The brand's philosophy is based on encouraging individuals to invest time and care into their hair care routine, turning daily maintenance into a time of self-care and reflection. Now, Crown Affair has expanded its product line to include Ritual Shampoo and Conditioner, Dry Shampoo, Leave-In-Her Conditioner, and more, each designed with the same spirit of quality and mindfulness.
Crown Affair's growth trajectory has been impressive, and its products are now available at well-known retailers such as Goop and Sephora, in addition to direct-to-consumer platforms. But perhaps the most notable aspect of Crown Affair is its incredibly cool and fresh branding, backed by Cohen's knowledge of what it takes to build a modern brand.
Before starting Crown Affair, Cohen had made quite a name for himself in the dynamic world of direct-to-consumer (DTC) startups. After breaking into the world of fashion and beauty with internships at top brands like Valentino and Thakoon, Cohen took a role at Into the Gloss, the beauty site founded by Emily Weiss. This was the beginning of her deep search for beauty. Industry potential. Her Cohen career followed Into the Gloss, with a variety of executive roles in marketing and partnerships. She played a key role in launching her shopping app Spring and consulted for shoe brand Tamara Her Melon. She then spearheaded an away partnership, further demonstrating her ability to build connections that increase the visibility and appeal of her brand.
In 2017, Cohen ventured into entrepreneurship with Levitate, a consulting firm that became the unsung force behind emerging DTC brands. Under her guidance, Levitate led brands such as Outdoor Her Voice, Flamingo, Harry's, and Back Her Mason to significant growth, cementing Cohen's reputation as a DTC genius and ultimately earning her the crown. Pushed to the establishment of her Affair.
Listen to the latest episode of second life We spoke to learn how Cohen's experience in the DTC market led her to launch her own incredibly successful brand.
