Thunderstorms are expected to return and potentially intensify across North Texas on Wednesday and Thursday.
Severe weather could include heavy rain, large hail, and damaging winds. Flash flooding may also occur in some low-lying areas.
The National Weather Service in Fort Worth said there was a slight chance of a few tornadoes, with the worst of the weather possible in the afternoon and evening on both days.
The risk of localized thunderstorms could linger into Friday and Saturday, but most of Dallas will remain dry, according to a KXAS-TV (NBC5) forecast.
Weather Service meteorologist Jennifer Dunn said Dallas-Fort Worth likely won’t be dry over the next few days, as scattered rain is likely to continue into the weekend.
“We had a very active spring,” Dunn said. “March and April were both above average precipitation, and since January 1st, this year’s precipitation has been just over 6 inches above normal so far.” [Monday]”
May precipitation totals as of Monday were 3.72 inches at DFW International Airport and 5.68 inches at Dallas Love Field Airport.
Rain and a cold front will briefly cool temperatures Thursday, with highs expected to be in the mid-80s for the day, but temperatures should start to warm up by Friday.
The upcoming Memorial Day weekend will feel even warmer with temperatures in the 90s and high humidity.
“The heat will increase rapidly this weekend,” Dunn said. “High temperatures on Sunday will be in the low 90s Fahrenheit, with heat indexes likely to approach triple digits.”
Dunn said that although the storm is getting a lot of attention, the weather service is encouraging North Texas residents to be aware of the weather and take precautions against the heat.
