FRISCO – Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy supported his current group of wide receivers on Friday, the same day free agent Zay Jones signed a one-year contract with Arizona.
Jones visited Dallas, Kansas City and Arizona last week. Still, playing with Arizona quarterback Kyler Murray was a big draw for him.
The Cowboys' top two receivers are CeeDee Lamb and Brandin Cooks. However, Lamb has not participated in offseason practices as he seeks an extension to his contract.
Team officials are not worried about Lamb's absence.
The need for quarterback Dak Prescott to build chemistry with other receivers such as Jalen Tolbert, Kavonte Turpin, Jalen Brooks, Jalen Cropper, David Darden and Ryan Flournoy is key.
“Oh, I like the receiving room,” McCarthy said. “I think our young players are definitely going to take a leap forward. I think (Kavonte Turpin) is having a good offseason. Jalen Tolbert is having a great offseason. (Jalen Brooks), they're going to be great on Opening Day. I mean, they've been here since the end of the season. They've been very competitive.”
The Cowboys are not in contract talks with Lamb's agent, two people familiar with the situation said. dallas morning news.
It's unclear when Ram will return. The Cowboys are holding a mandatory veteran minicamp from June 4-6, and Lamb could be fined if he continues to no-show.
Last year, starting right guard Zach Martin wanted to extend his contract with the team and did not participate in mandatory minicamp.
Ram could do the same.
For now, Prescott plans to continue building relationships with The Star receivers, as well as off-site receivers.
“They've done a lot of the work themselves,” McCarthy said. “They've been training away from here with Dak. The reason I'm excited is because I can see the timing, I can see the connection with the quarterback, I can see the passing game. I know we're going down the route on the air, but not just what they need to do, but also what the quarterback is doing and how it all fits together. I think there's obviously a high level of understanding. We're kind of having a normal second year on offense.”
