FRISCO – Monday's first day of NFL free agency doesn't look that way right now, as it's all about who leaves and/or rejects Dallas.
But the Cowboys have a roster-building plan, right? And they need a running back, right?
That player probably won't be Saquon Barkley. He's signed with the Eagles.
That player is not Tony Pollard. He is under contract with the Titans.
But now another name has appeared. Will the Cowboys really give Aaron Jones an “immediate call” now that the Green Bay Packers have waived him after trying to negotiate a pay cut?
That was the word early Monday, thanks to a suggestion from the Washington Post. And now, NFL sources tell CowboysSI.com that Dallas is “interested” in Jones.
Can we expect some action here? If you've been following our coverage of “scoops” that have or have linked Dallas to guys like Saquon Barkley and Derrick Henry, you already know the answer; it's money. That's a problem, and Jones likely has other suitors. Don't give Jones a bad idea.
He is only 29 years old, and injuries are currently an issue for him. But there's a reason the Cowboys are bothered by the damage he did in the playoffs. Jones rushed for 118 yards and three touchdowns in the Packers' first-round playoff win over the Cowboys. Oh, and he added another 108 yards in the Packers' loss to the 49ers in the second round.
By the way, Green Bay won't be in a difficult situation. The man drafted to replace Jones, AJ Dillon, is already set to become a free agent. He turns 26 this year and has his own injury concerns. But the Packers just signed former rushing champion Josh Jacobs from the Raiders. So they have a solution.
Spotrac claims that Jones' current market value is just $5 million per year. That's not outrageous. And the Cowboys need someone to play running back. So we're not going to scoff at the word from sources about Aaron Jones…we'll put aside our well-earned skepticism, at least for the time being.
