Elon Musk's rocket launch and spacecraft company SpaceX is planning a five-story office in South Texas.
This is clear, according to filings with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation.
The project, dubbed SpaceX's Starbase Office, calls for $100 million in new construction in Brownsville, according to filings.
The construction includes a more than 329,000 square foot office mezzanine that will serve as an addition to the 1 million square foot industrial plant. It is located within the company's Starbase, a spaceport, production and development facility that stretches approximately 20 miles for SpaceX's Starship rocket.
Construction will begin on February 24th at the site near Boca Chica Beach along the South Bay of the Gulf of Mexico, with completion scheduled for January 1st, 2025.
SpaceX, founded by Musk in 2002, has gradually established a foothold in Texas' Rio Grande Valley to test rockets designed to launch near-orbit satellites and develop Mars missions. The company is lobbying to have parts of Brownsville and the Boca Chica area officially renamed Starbase to express its commitment to the area.
Beyond SpaceX, Musk has invested heavily in the Lone Star State in recent years, primarily to avoid California's stricter and more expensive business policies. He moved the headquarters of Tesla and The Boring Company to Austin and Bastrop, respectively. Central Texas is also home to Tesla's Gigafactory.
Neuralink and SpaceX remain based in California. Musk also acquired Company X (formerly Twitter) last year.
The $100 million figure listed in the state application makes it Cameron County's largest construction project filed under the name Space Exploration Technologies. Earlier this year, the company submitted plans for a $15 million shopping center and restaurant project it will call “RioWest.”
SpaceX's recent moves include: Intuitive machine Nova Moon Lander On February 14th, 100 old satellites were removed from orbit.
