After making two big trades on Thursday for P.J. Washington and Daniel Gafford, the Dallas Mavericks' eyes have turned to the buyout market.
Dallas has one spot open on the roster after trading three players on Thursday, with former fan-favorite guard Spencer Dinwiddie being the main target.
Dinwiddie was with the Mavs, who reached the Western Conference Finals in 2022, and would have been a top choice to shore up Dallas' bench. The Mavs need another creator off the bench due to Dante Exum's recent unreliability, and Dinwiddie could be that for Dallas.
Dinwiddie's top two options were the Los Angeles Lakers and Mavs, but he ended up signing with the Lakers. The Los Angeles native revealed on Monday why he chose the Lakers over the Mavs.
“Let's say you were a kid and a bully hit you (expletive), and Dallas would be like your mother and say, 'It's okay, baby,'” Dinwiddie said. “The Lakers are like your dad: 'No, you better go out and fight 'til you win.'
His explanation of why he chose the Lakers over the Mavs is very strange and confusing, but it could be taken in several ways. The first take on this, and it also seems most likely, is that Dinwiddie chose Los Angeles because it was the more difficult option.
Dallas would have been an easy choice since Dinwiddie has already played there, but he could have chosen Los Angeles because he wanted a challenge.
While some believe this quote was a jab at the Mavs and their culture, it seems more likely that Dinwiddie was looking for a bigger challenge and a fresh start with the Lakers.
The Dallas Mavericks' next game is tonight against the Washington Wizards.
