According to police, the suspect died in an apparent suicide.
The manhunt for the gunman who killed four people, including a 1-year-old boy, at a Dallas, Texas, home ends after the suspect led police on a high-speed chase down a highway and died in an apparent suicide after crashing into a ditch. That ended it. authorities said.
The quadruple murders occurred Sunday afternoon in a southeast Dallas neighborhood. Dallas police said the massacre appears to have stemmed from an isolated incident and there is “no threat to the general public.”
Police said in a statement that during the investigation, they identified 21-year-old Byron Carrillo as the suspect in the shooting.
Families of those killed told ABC affiliate WFAA that Carrillo was the ex-girlfriend of one of the victims, 20-year-old Vanessa de la Cruz, and that she was the mother of Del Cruz's child. He said he was Logan de la Cruz's father. A boy was killed in the attack.
According to the family, they broke up because Delacruz accused Carrillo of being abusive. The shooting happened at Delacruz's parents' home.
Police said Carrillo was ordered to wear an ankle monitoring device after being charged with aggravated assault in 2021. It was not immediately clear whether Vanessa Delacruz was the victim in the 2021 incident.
“The suspect severed the ankle monitor at some point before or after the crime,” police said in a statement about Sunday's shooting.
Police said Carrillo was spotted driving the stolen vehicle on Interstate 35 in Austin on Monday, more than 320 miles from Dallas.
A highway patrol officer attempted to stop him and a pursuit ensued, police said. During the chase, Carrillo left the highway, crashed into a ditch and attempted to flee the scene on foot, police said.
“As officers approached Carrillo, he shot himself in the head and died at the scene,” police said.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found three adults dead from gunshot wounds and two children, Logan and a 15-year-old girl, inside the home, police said.

The motive for the killing is still under investigation.
