COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KBTX) – Students at Texas A&M University have created an app to help residents get essential tasks done.
If you know anything about the Big Event, you know it’s a popular local event where students help residents in need throughout the day, and this new app will make this service available to residents all year round.
Zach Miller came up with the idea and launched the app, Spare Hand Students, in April, and in the past two weeks, the number of tasks completed by students through the app has skyrocketed from 150 to 500.
Customers can use the app to find help with household chores, errands, yard work, heavy lifting, pet care and more. Miller said many of these students have majors that relate to homemaking.
“A lot of people look down on students and say things like, ‘wait until you graduate,’ but these students are so good at what they do that it’s high quality and ultimately they get to help local students in need,” he said. “They’re in their third or fourth year and many of them have their degree on their resume and how it helps customers. They can really gauge who to choose because, say, a construction science student is amazing in every way. They’ll put it on there and say they have like 10 years of experience doing odd jobs.”
Miller said he hopes to continue expanding his outreach to gain customers within the community and reach out to other campuses to help launch Spare Hand Students across the state. The app can be downloaded from the Apple App Store or Google Play.
