AUSTIN (KXAN) — A New York jury on Thursday returned a guilty verdict against former President Donald Trump on 34 counts of falsifying business records in a scheme to illegally influence the 2016 election.
Local and Texas state leaders and politicians quickly reacted to the verdict on social media.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott said:
This was a sham trial. Any appeals by the camouflage courts will never be accepted. The American people deserve better than a sitting President of the United States using the justice system as a weapon against his political opponents to win the election. Joe Biden must be fired in November.
Lt. Governor Dan Patrick said on social media:
Today’s guilty verdict against President Trump is a complete travesty of the justice system. No crime was committed and the prosecution’s main witness was a convicted liar and admitted to theft. The judge was biased against President Trump throughout the entire trial. This will one day be overturned, but the Democrats got what they wanted: to prosecute and persecute a man they know cannot win in November. If the justice system can do this to a former president, it can do it to anyone in America. This should frighten all Americans. New York and Biden have turned our country into a third world style justice system that goes after political opponents like we see in Russia and North Korea. It’s a sad day for America.
Attorney General Ken Paxton issued the following statement:
I have supported President Trump from the beginning of this sham trial, and my support for him has never been stronger. As Attorney General of Texas, I will do everything in my power to fight this blatant corruption and political persecution emanating from New York and the Biden Administration.
The Texas Republican Party released the following statement:
Today’s camouflage trial verdict shows how far Democrats will go to destroy those they simply don’t agree with. As Biden continues to use the justice system as a weapon against his political opponents, we must draw the line. Everything they are doing to President Trump, they will do to you next. November 5th is our last chance to save America. Texas grassroots is united and excited to elect President Donald Trump as the 47th President of the United States. We need to restore our sovereignty, close our borders, secure our elections, and restore our prosperity and freedom.
U.S. Senator Ted Cruz issued the following statement:
“This is a dark day for America. This entire trial is a sham, nothing more than political persecution. The only reason Donald Trump was indicted is because Democrats fear his reelection. This disgraceful conviction has no legal basis and should be immediately overturned on appeal. Any judge with any integrity would admit this entire trial was completely rigged.”
Senator John Cornyn released the following statement on social media:
This verdict is a disgrace and this trial should never have happened. Now more than ever, we need to rally behind @realdonaldtrump to take back the White House and Senate and get our country back on track. The real verdict will be on Election Day.
Texas Rep. Dustin Burrows said:
“The trial of President Trump has been a farce that Joe Biden planned for before it even began. Americans of both parties should be horrified that a sitting president would weaponize our justice system to protect himself in November. This is a dark day for our country.
U.S. Rep. Lloyd Doggett (D-Austin) issued the following statement:
“Trump is a convicted felon and was found guilty of all 34 counts by a jury. The verdict and appeals are yet to come, but no one is above the law, including this wannabe ruler. Trump is now playing the victim to encourage more wrongdoing while Republicans invent excuses for a felon kingpin. This is the second time a jury has ruled against Trump, the last time for rape.”
Texas Congressman Jeff Leach released the following statement:
What we saw today, while sad and shocking, is unfortunately not new. For decades, the Left has been using our justice system to enforce their radical will and systematically transform our nation. They have not only aggressively trampled on President Trump’s rights, they have trampled on the Constitution itself. We should all fear the weaponization of our justice system. Democrat-led duck courts will stop at nothing to discredit President Trump and stop him from winning the next presidential election, no matter the cost.
