AUSTIN – Texas Longhorns defensive lineman Ty'Vondre Sweat is preparing for the NFL Draft as one of the most touted players in his class.
But his journey to the next level got a little complicated.
On Saturday night, Sweat was arrested by Austin police on suspicion of driving under the influence, Longhorns Country confirmed. DWI is a Class B misdemeanor in Texas. According to the Travis County Jail, bail has not yet been set for Sweat, who was booked at 2:12 p.m.
KXAN's Nabil Brent Remadona first reported the incident.
Sweat was arguably the Longhorns' biggest star of the 2023-24 College Football Playoff last season, winning the Outland Trophy given to the nation's best interior lineman. He also won the Big 12 Player of the Year Award.
Sweat was also named a unanimous All-American, becoming the 24th Longhorn in program history to earn the unanimous honor, joining Scott Appleton (1963), Brad Shearer (1977) and Steve McMichael. He became the fifth defensive tackle to do so after (1979). and Kenneth Sims (1981).
Last season, Sweat totaled 42 tackles, two sacks and five passes defensed during the regular season. He also scored a 2-yard touchdown in Texas' 49-21 victory over the Oklahoma State Cowboys in the Big 12 Championship.
During his five-year career at Texas, Sweat totaled 127 tackles, five sacks, 15 passes defended and one forced fumble. He will likely be one of the top defensive linemen selected in the 2024 NFL Draft.
Sweat is primarily considered a second-day pick in the upcoming draft and has been derided in recent days by teams like the Houston Texans, who are in dire need of interior defensive line help.
This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
