ARLINGTON — Another day, another first-round draft pick lost to injury.
The Rangers placed infielder Justin Foscue on the 10-day injured list on Monday after he was diagnosed with a left oblique strain. Foscue, who was called up last week, felt pain in that area during his at-bat Sunday, when he recorded his first major league hit and RBI. Foscue, the club's first-round pick in 2020, was called up to replace 2019 first-round pick Josh Jung, who broke his wrist after being hit by a swinging pitch last Monday.
Rangers officials said the club is working to evaluate Foscue to determine the severity of the injury. First baseman Nathaniel Rowe suffered a torticollis contusion on March 6. He is scheduled to participate in batting practice for the first time since then on Tuesday, and it will likely be at least a week before he returns.
The Rangers bought out the contract of infielder Davis Wenzel from Triple-A Round Rock to replace Foscue. In order to add Wenzel to the 40-man roster, the team moved Jung to the 60-day IL. Chung will not be eligible to return until June 1st.
Wenzel, 26, was also an additional first-round pick from Baylor in 2019. The infielder was the 41st overall pick, acquired after the Rangers traded reliever Alex Claudio to Milwaukee.
Wenzel got off to a strong start this season with three home runs and a 1.076 OPS in nine games with Round Rock. He has four walks and four strikeouts. He can also be used with a little more defensive versatility than Foscue.
