ARLINGTON — Texas Rangers shortstop Corey Seager left the game in the bottom of the second inning against the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday with a tight left hamstring.
The 30-year-old Seager singled with two outs off Tigers left-hander Joey Wentz to score the game’s first run, but strained his left hamstring while reaching first base. The team’s training staff evaluated him and removed him from the game, replacing him with infielder Ezequiel Duran.
Rangers manager Bruce Bochy said the club isn’t too concerned and that Seager isn’t scheduled to undergo an MRI.
“We’ll know after the rest day. I don’t think it’s too serious,” Bochy said. “We just wanted to give him a rest. We’ll know on Friday what Corey’s situation is. He might need to rest a day, but we don’t know yet.”
The reigning World Series MVP has been the bright spot in a shaky Texas lineup over the past month. Seager was named the team’s Player of the Month in May after batting .287/.387/.660 with 11 home runs and 21 RBIs while smashing eight home runs in eight games.
“I’m OK,” Seager said after the game. “I’ll just see how the next few days go and go from there.”
His 1.8 WAR is fourth among American League shortstops, and his 13 home runs are second, according to FanGraphs.
Seager missed 31 games last season with a left hamstring injury and another 12 games in the second half with a sprained thumb. He got off to a slow start in April but bounced back in May after playing just three games in spring training due to offseason sports hernia repair surgery.
