Which positions should the Cowboys prioritize during the offseason?
Assemble your coaching staff, build your roster, and regain your fan base. These are the top three priorities for the Dallas Cowboys this offseason, and there's no way to know how things will turn out at this point.
They are currently in the midst of replacing Dan Quinn, but there is just as much, if not more important, work going on behind closed doors. Player evaluation for the offseason should be in full swing by now. Figuring out how they want to fill their roster needs through free agency and the upcoming 2024 NFL Draft is one of their biggest tasks now.
Today we will rank the “needs” on their roster to understand how the Dallas Cowboys can approach both free agency and the NFL Draft. That could help determine how they approach free agency and the draft, and which positions are prioritized over others.
Dallas Cowboys 2024 Roster Requirements
- left tackle
- center
- linebacker
- corner back
- run back
- defensive tackle
Rank your roster needs
#1 – Center
Tyler Biadasz has been a solid starter for the Cowboys over the past few seasons, but it appears Dallas is willing to allow him to test free agency. If they choose not to re-sign him, finding his replacement will likely be a top priority this offseason. We've already seen them select one of the top centers in numerous mock drafts this year, as they don't currently have any starting options on their roster.
#2 – Left Tackle
Based on the value of the position, left tackle should probably be at the top of Dallas' roster needs this offseason. This position is probably the most important position in the NFL other than QB. Re-signing Tyron Smith would be an easy solution, but can we expect him to stay healthy for an entire season? The Cowboys could move Tyler Smith back to LT, but he looked like he could be an All-Pro at left guard last season. With all this in mind, finding a blindside protector that will last for the long haul is almost a top priority.
#3 – Running Back
With Tony Pollard and Rico Doodle potentially leaving in free agency, running back will be a top priority for the Cowboys this offseason. It's possible they could re-sign one or both if the price is right, but that doesn't rule out the possibility of Dallas looking to upgrade at the position through free agency or the 2024 NFL Draft. Because of this, expect them to continue to be linked to the top running back candidates in this year's draft as well as top veterans at the position in free agency.
#4 – Defensive Tackle
Jonathan Hankins and Neville Gallimore are both free agents, and Maji Smith needs to improve significantly in his rookie season with the Cowboys. Besides Osa Odighizuwa, Dallas currently has a number of unproven undersized/tweener players on the depth chart at the DT position. Improving the defense should also help improve other positions.
#5 – Linebacker
With the returns of Damone Clark, Mark-Keith Bell, and DeMarvion Overshawn, the Dallas Cowboys aren't in terrible shape at linebacker heading into the offseason. That doesn't mean they can't afford to move up significantly at the position through free agency, the 2024 NFL Draft, or both. But it's probably not as much of a priority as one might think. As mentioned earlier, strengthening the defensive side will help dramatically improve the play of the LBs, which is why it is ranked 5th.
#6 – Cornerback
With Trevon Diggs and Daron Brand, the Cowboys are in pretty good shape at cornerback heading into the offseason. However, there are some concerns about Diggs considering his return from a season-ending knee injury. On top of that, they also risk losing two key members of their secondary, Stephon Gilmore and Jordan Lewis, to free agency. They'd probably want to re-sign Gilmore if his offer isn't too high, but adding another free agent or rookie CB is probably a priority this offseason, and the fact that the CB ranks It could be higher.
