FiveIntage Halston dresses, Frederic Remington sculptures, fine crystal, countless antiques, lush rugs from the White House Treaty Room…these are just a few of the highlights you’ll find at Marilyn Hoffman’s historic Lakewood estate, which will host one of the most intriguing estate sales of the year. “I think people will be here for hours,” says Stephen King, co-owner of Dallas Estate Cellars.
King, who runs one of the city’s leading real estate sales companies with José Tamayo, deals in only the rarest collections of property. “We turn down more than we take on,” King says. “The size of the house is often not the issue, it’s what’s inside that counts.”
The 8,000-square-foot mansion of the late Marilyn Hoffman, a longtime Dallas luxury real estate agent. Once made history Offering (and selling) the most expensive homes in Texas certainly fits the bill for Dallas real estate sellers.
In addition to her impressive real estate career, Hoffman also showed and bred Arabian horses, a passion that remains at the heart of the sprawling estate where she and her family lived for nearly 50 years. Equestrian statues, paintings, textiles and dusters are featured throughout, and the DES team also decided to leave the larger-than-life family photographs and portraits intact, a rarity in luxury estate sales.
“I don’t think we could present this house without her influence,” says Marilyn Hoffman’s daughter, Gina Miller, who grew up in the house. “It represents who she was and what she loved: horses, real estate and partying. She was a true Dallas party girl, and I don’t mean that in a negative way.”
It was a showpiece for the town, but for Miller it was a magical place growing up: The house, which her family originally purchased in the 1970s on about 22 acres, is just a few doors down from two filming locations for the 1980s TV show “Star Wars.” Dallas“I used to sneak downstairs to watch the nightly filming,” said Miller, a longtime sportscaster who now serves as vice president of media and communications for FC Dallas.
As for the elegant green carpet that reportedly resided in Washington, D.C. (A framed newspaper clipping is evidence), Miller recalls romanticizing it. “You can let your imagination run wild in a house like that,” she says. “I would pretend I was at a state dinner at the White House. It was a very special place to grow up.”
