The latest episode of the Variety Australia podcast features a conversation with composer, author, singer, actor and comedian Tim Minchin, a true polymath.

“Around the turn of the century [in] “In 2000…I was writing a little bit for very little money for a children's theater company called Barking Echo,” he begins his story. “I can't remember why, but it just occurred to me that 'Matilda' would make a good musical.”
So Minchin emailed the people who had the rights to “Matilda” and asked if they could turn it into a musical. They were interested, but it wasn't the right time, so Minchin let it go. Eight years later, she received a phone call from Tony Award winner Matthew Warchus of the Royal Shakespeare Company, who asked her to collaborate on his musical Matilda.
The rest, as they say, is history.

He talks about his experiences working with like-minded people, including Warchus on “Matilda,” and the delicate balance of maintaining artistic integrity while accepting the contributions of others.
“I think my favorite thing is collective creativity, which is interesting because I'm pretty in control,” he says. “But he worked on two musicals with Dennis and Matthew, or Danny and Matthew, and in those early days, this story could be anything – what is it? – and that's nice.”
