A fine barbecue smokehouse from a famous Plano restaurant family is closing: Papa's Delta, an upscale barbecue restaurant from Houston-based Papa's Restaurants (Papa's Seafood Kitchen, Papa's Brothers Steakhouse, Papasito's Cantina) – Blues Smokehouse has closed its store at 3916 Dallas. Pakwee. Almost 5 years later.
Plano opened in 2019 on the site of Bone Daddy's, making it the concept's second location. The original location opened in Webster, Texas in 2017 and remains open, according to a statement from the restaurant, which sent a “thank you” email to customers but did not specifically explain the closure. It is said that there was no such thing.
Pappas has a regular BBQ restaurant at Pappas Bar-Q in northwest Dallas.
But the goal for Delta Blues was to offer a twist on the barbecue experience by enhancing the barbecue menu with a selection of Southern classics in a full-service, sophisticated environment.
The barbecue options were upscale by barbecue standards, including Creekstone Farms USDA Prime beef brisket, jalapeño and cheddar sausage, Berkshire pork belly, St. Louis-style ribs, and beef ribs.
Sides included poppy seed cabbage slaw, collard greens and turnips, and mac and cheese with buttered cracker crust.
They also served entrees like dry-aged steak and blackened Mississippi catfish. Fried chicken is a gourmet combination of white and dark meat. Grilled salmon with bourbon maple glaze. Plus appetizers, salads, soups, burgers, and sandwiches.
Southern elements are present in dishes such as fried green tomatoes with peppercorn ranch and goat cheese. Gumbo with pork belly, pickled onions, deviled eggs with crystal hot sauce, and smoked chicken and beef sausage.
The bar featured a large selection of American whiskeys, cocktails such as the Frozen Whiskey Smash, beers on tap and in bottles, and wine by the glass or bottle.
I mean, what's not to like? But the restaurant wasn't killing business customers as much as Papa's other concepts. The idea of paying extra for a barbecue, no matter how fancy, was met with resistance from local residents.
