Travis Kelce was one of the most promising tight ends in the NFL after being drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs in 2013, but was passed over by the Dallas Cowboys due to a poor interview.
The Dallas Cowboys decided not to draft Travis Kelce due to concerns about his past.
Travis spoke on his New Heights podcast with his brother Jason about why the Cowboys selected Gavin Escobar and Terrence Williams over him in the 2013 NFL Draft.
“I had some terrible interviews at the combine,” Travis said. “The Cowboys approached me about the red flag of him missing a year.”
Jason reminded everyone that the reason Travis didn't play for the University of Cincinnati in 2010 was because he got in trouble for using marijuana in violation of team rules. The Cowboys kept this in mind when speaking with Travis, and an honest conversation developed between Travis and the player.

“I don't know if it was a bad morning or not. It was basically just a morning. I don't even know if I want to say this,” Travis turned to Jason. “It happened really quickly. It was basically, 'If you guys think I'm going to be that guy, or that I've fought everything to get to this point, I'm still going to be that guy.' I just said, 'If you're wondering, 'I'm missing a season now, so you guys are probably going to go somewhere else and pick someone else.' ”
Almost immediately after Travis told his story, Dallas explained that he had done just that, much to his brother's amusement. But Travis has never looked back.
After drafting and coaching Jason with the Philadelphia Eagles, Travis has been with Kansas since being selected in the third round by the Chiefs with the 63rd overall pick thanks to head coach Andy Reid's familiarity with him and his family. He has had a great career at City. In addition to helping the Chiefs win three Super Bowls, Travis was named to the All-Pro team seven times, first team four times and second team three times.
