dallas – A teenager will be sentenced to 60 years in prison for being part of a group that killed a man during a robbery in a Costco parking lot in Dallas two years ago.
Ali Elbana was shot and killed in November 2021 during an attempted armed robbery outside a store in Northeast Dallas.
Family members said the 60-year-old man was at the Costco Business Center warehouse off Park Lane to pick up supplies for the Arlington store. As he was loading groceries into his SUV, a group of suspects in a stolen truck attempted to rob him.
Ali's loved ones were in court Monday morning at the Frank Crowley Court Building as 18-year-old Camron Renzi pleaded guilty to murder with a deadly weapon and aggravated assault.
Renzi was 16 years old at the time of the shooting, but a judge ruled that he should be tried as an adult.
On Friday, 20-year-old James Revels also pleaded guilty to murder and aggravated assault. He was sentenced to 40 years in prison.
Judge Lela Lawrence Mayes' courtroom on Monday was filled with happy photos of Ali as his family shared the shock of his murder in November 2021.
Ali and his brother Khalil Elbanna emigrated from Lebanon 40 years ago.
“These people sitting here look like nothing. They look at me like I'm nothing,” Khalil said. “You killed my brother and you have shown no remorse.”
On November 16, 2021, Ali was loaded into his car at Costco on Park Lane when four people approached him. Ali was robbed and then Renji shot her to death. He agreed to a plea deal Monday.
Renzi was sentenced to 60 years in prison for Ali's murder and 30 years for robbery. Both statements are executed simultaneously.
Ms Revels appeared in court to hear a victim impact statement. He also took a 40-year plea deal.
Through Saeed Elbanna's trembling voice, we learned how his father reached out to those who had sinned himself.
“He gave them a second chance. No one would hire them because they were felons,” Ali's son said. “He gave them a car. He gave them rent. He gave them everything. He literally gave them everything he had in life. He gave them a second chance. They were felons. So no one hired them.”
There was a sad silence in the courtroom as Ali's daughter Stephanie Elbana wants her father's killers to hear what she heard on that November night two and a half years ago. It looked as if it had been washed away.
“There was a knock on the door just after midnight. There were four strange-looking police officers. They were asking about my sister. 'This is about your father,' they said. I remember the sound of me pleading to God, 'Not my husband! Please God, not my husband!' “I remember my brother's screams. I remember my sisters' cries over the phone. I remember the sound of my uncles' grief being torn apart one by one. I remember that day and every day since. Hold your phone and wait for the call that never comes.”
A third suspect, Janiyah Miller, is also charged with secret murder, aggravated robbery, fleeing in a motor vehicle, and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.
A fourth suspect, Jacoby Tatum, is charged only with aggravated robbery.
Their cases have not yet reached trial.
