It’s mailer season! And we are reaching new levels of creativity.
This week on the VOSD Podcast, hosts Scott Lewis, Jacob McWhinney, and Will Huntsberry offer high-level media criticism of recent political emails and materials that employ new and disruptive strategies (lol).
From county supervisors to San Diego mayoral elections, new developments in local politics are unfolding in the mail. And a signboard. And a lawn sign.
One such tactic by Mayor Todd Gloria's Independent Expenditure Committee appears to be an effort to boost Republican front-runner Jane Glasson. Similarly, County Supervisor Terra Lawson Rimmer's campaign is promoting brand synergy with former President Donald Trump and his November opponent, former Mayor Kevin Faulconer. In this episode, our crew discusses these messages and strategies ahead of the March 2024 primary election. (Please send mailers to Lewis at scott@vosd.org.)
Plus: A recap of upcoming races. San Diego City Council President Sean Elo Rivera has an opponent who enjoys some support among local leaders. perhaps City Attorney Mara Elliott.
Elliott's seat is also vacant. Elliott's chief of staff, Heather Furbert, is facing Congressman Brian Maienschein. Both candidates are gathering allies for their campaigns to fill the position, which has seen discord at City Hall in recent years.
Distrust of D8
Some races may be affected by flooding. That's because many residents in southeast San Diego remain angry.
Floods in January destroyed neighborhoods within San Diego's 8th District.
People are furious that the city has ignored them for years. Huntsberry shared what he heard from residents, documenting a potentially pivotal moment in San Diego's history.
For now, Huntsberry said, these people just want an apology from the city, an admission of negligence, and for local leaders to do the work of maintaining the infrastructure and vegetation around their homes.
