Buckle up! It's time for elementary education.
This week, on the last VOSD podcast before the March 5 election, hosts Scott Lewis, Andrea Lopez Villafaña, and Jacob McWhinney take a look at votes from the U.S. Senate to the City Council.
So far, voters seem reluctant. Politico reported that this election is expected to have the lowest turnout ever. And that makes sense in a way. California voters don't care about the presidential election at all. Even the California Senate race (despite shattered spending records) is a sure-fire Democratic victory and will not affect party control of Congress.
But our staff suggests thinking about your vote like this: Who do you want to vote for? Number 2 place?
San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria, for example, couldn't be safer. So, if you're a die-hard fan of his T-Glo, who do you play against? Who will shape the conversation and push Gloria in the direction you want this year?
López-Villafaña recently moderated a mayoral debate (without the current mayor) and said there were only two candidates who could actually take the second spot: Genevieve Jones-Wright and Larry Turner. I concluded.
Jones-Wright, a Democrat, is an attorney and advocate for criminal justice reform. Turner, a former Marine and current police officer, is a wild card independent focused on homelessness.
You can continue the same approach throughout your poll. Representative Adam Schiff is likely to face the Senate runoff. Who do you want him to run against and help shape the political debate in this election?
This week, we're talking about the runners-up.
plus: McWhinney told the story of a middle school math teacher who was effectively accused of sexual harassment but was quietly allowed to retire. And we're joined by North County reporter Tigist Lane to talk about the “public safety first” approach to homelessness that Escondido has passed.
