Last week, senior investigative reporter Will Huntsberry reported that some residents in southeast San Diego are losing trust in local government.
San Diego Mayor's Office staff called the report “dangerous.”
This week on the VOSD Podcast, hosts Scott Lewis, Andrea López Villafaña, and Jacob McWhinney discuss the original story, how residents felt about the city's neglect during the January floods, and the mayor's Discuss the response of public relations staff.
Chida: Warren Darby also talks about trust. She is a candidate for city council and also works for mayor. Lewis called her, who is running for her important City Council seat, last week to confirm her position on current issues, including the city's response to the Jan. 22 floods. Although she now works for the mayor, she assured Lewis that “she will not be the mayor's puppet.” She is vying to fill the City Council District 4 seat vacated by Supervisor Monica Montgomery Stepp.
And school layoffs are coming. McWhinney expanded on comments made this week by San Diego Unified Board of Commissioners Vice President Cody Pettersson, who said the district needed to make layoffs because of a looming budget deficit.
It has been a long time since schools have had to grapple with budget holes like this. But with coronavirus relief funding drying up and enrollment declining, education leaders will soon have to decide where to make cuts.
