— There's no question Jason Kidd needs a reliable third-point player. Rick Carlyle might have used it too. You know what else brings them together? Luka Doncic looked over his shoulder and complained to the head coach on Sunday, just like he did when Carlisle was here, before Uncle Ricky flourished elsewhere.
— The Duncanville girls basketball team has now won 12 state titles, behind Panhandle hoops hotbeds Nazareth (25) and Canyon (20). It was a pretty big year for Duncanville, which also won its second straight state football title.
— Jim Wacker first met Chris Mortensen on TCU's campus in the fall of 1985 after he submitted his program. Mort was still at the Atlanta newspapers at the time, and my first impression was, “Why would someone from Atlanta care about TCU's paying players?” He talked about what kind of reporter he was long before he became a star at ESPN. He is also a nice gentleman. RIP.
— Relax, Pistol Pete fans. Even though Caitlin Clark's 3,685 points at the University of Iowa were more than Pete Maravich, who amassed 3,667 points at LSU from 1967 to 1970, there are no official NCAA categories for either men or women. Caitlin still has her records and Pete still has his records. And Pete is in a different category. He played in an era when freshmen were not eligible for varsity, and there was no 3-point line or shot clock. But no doubt, as a basketball lover, he would have been a fan of Caitlin Clark.
— Kudos to former NFL receiver Braylon Edwards for stopping an assault on an 80-year-old man at a Michigan YMCA. I'd like to think that the next time things go sideways on the treadmill at the Y, someone will genuinely do the same for you.
