Explaining what draft capital the Mavericks could move if they choose to do so before the NBA trade deadline
There is currently confusion over what can and cannot happen with the Dallas Mavericks before Thursday's NBA trade deadline. Here's a quick rundown of what can and can't happen according to the current rules for trading NBA draft picks.
Only seven draft picks will be available in the future through trade. As a result, the current list of draft picks eligible for trade only goes through 2030. After the 2024 draft, teams will be able to use their 2031 draft picks to complete a trade.
First, let's take a look at the Mavericks' next seven draft first- and second-round picks and see if the Mavericks still own them.
Of the next seven drafts, the Mavericks own the following picks:
Do the Mavericks have other picks?
yes. They have second round picks from other teams:
- Toronto Raptors 2025 Second Round Selection
- Miami Heat 2028 2nd round pick
What could the Mavericks trade?
Even though Dallas has five of the next seven first-round picks, that doesn't mean they can trade five, four, three, or even two of them right now. The Stepien Rule prohibits teams from trading first-round picks in a way that could potentially advance them into two consecutive “future” drafts. The Mavericks owe the Nets a 2029 first-round pick. Therefore, the Mavericks cannot make any trades that might result in a first-round pick in 2028 or 2030. This doesn't mean they have to have their own first-round pick, or any first-round pick, or even another team's pick. . . That's why they were able to swap rights San Antonio for a 2030 first-rounder.
What would happen if the Mavericks guaranteed the Knicks a top-10 spot first in 2024? And if the Mavericks finish inside the top 10 again, how will that affect their ability to make a first trade now?
I've seen a lot of people boldly state that the Mavericks can't trade him beyond 2026 because the pick protection owed to the Knicks expires in 2025. This is partly true and partly false. The Mavs certainly can't trade a 2026 pick like they did last year when they traded Kyrie and a 2029 pick to the Nets.
However, they could use the “first available draft” language to give them a pick that could end up being in 2026. This is exactly what happened when the Mavericks traded for Kristaps Porzingis. At that point, Dallas still owed the Hawks a protected first-rounder who could be taken in the 2019, 2020 or 2021 draft. You might not have thought the Mavericks would trade these picks, but they did. They used the “first available draft” language to give the Knicks their 2021 first (unprotected, I might add) and then another protected one that Dallas still owes. Gave first.
So what can the Mavericks offer?
The Mavericks would be able to trade first in the “first available draft”, which would be 2026, if Dallas first communicated the 2024 draft to the Knicks. If a first-round pick is conveyed to the Knicks in 2025, the “first available draft” would be in 2027. (Side note: If the Mavericks were the first to trade the unprotected “first available draft,” and the Knicks pick was not communicated.) In 2024 or 2025, 2025 would be I think there may be a draft available. However, we are not 100% sure, so we exclude this possibility from our conclusions)
Dallas could also trade him before 2027. One problem with him here is that it looks like it's all or nothing for that team and the Mavericks. They will be the first to give 2027 without protection. Leaving the team extremely vulnerable to three of the four drafts in 2027, 2029, and 2030. Or they could protect 2027 first, giving other teams an asset that means nothing. The Mavericks could acquire Miami's 2028 second-round pick as protected compensation. Dallas could pursue an unprotected swap in 2028 as compensation. These options appear to complicate the balancing of trades.
