Which of the UDFAs the team has signed is the most intriguing, and who is most likely to make the roster? – Stephen Smith/Coatesville, Pennsylvania
Nick Harris: When I did my initial film research for UDFA, the two that most impressed me were Nevada safety Emanie Johnson and South Dakota linebacker Brock Mogensen. Both have high IQs in the run game and both worked on their machines in their respective programs. As for who is most likely to make the roster, we need to look at the two position groups of greatest need: defensive tackle and running back, and identify Illinois DT Denzel Duxon. He is still relatively new to football and is a run stuffer. And he rated Missouri running back Nathaniel Peat as having the best shot on paper. I also wouldn't rule out high support for Mogensen and UCF LB Jason Johnson.
Mickey: I can't say I've seen the player play, but there's no doubt that Minnesota tight end Brevin Span-Johnson has caught the Cowboys' attention. That's because they reportedly signed him to a $15,000 bonus and guaranteed him at least a full year of practice squad salary. . Heck, he's 6-6, 260 pounds and has played six seasons with the Gophers due to COVID, so he's already 24 years old so he has experience and maturity. He appears to be a blocking-type tight end candidate, and the Cowboys need one of those guys around him all the time, but he still has the ability to be a big target to catch the ball over the middle. But remember, the Cowboys found an intriguing player last year in one of those tight ends, John Stevens. Unfortunately, he tore his ACL during training camp in hopes of making the team, but he will be healthy enough to start camp this summer.
