Although I originally signed a letter of support, this letter expresses my opposition to Senate Bill 52.
When I first agreed to add my name to the list of companies supporting SB 52, I simply didn't have enough time to learn enough about the Blue Line. These are the main reasons why I believe rapid transit is a great (if not perfect) solution for our community. Vehicle speed must be reduced. Speeding cars are a serious problem along Washington Street. A pedestrian and a driver were killed. Accidents happen on a daily basis. A young child in our Irvington community was killed in Washington. Even one death is too many.
2. This allows more people to get where they need to go quickly and easily. I'm lucky enough to own a car so I can drive everywhere, but so many people in the city rely on unreliable buses. Often when I'm driving somewhere, I see someone waiting for a bus in bad weather, and 45 minutes later, on my way home, that same person is still standing there in the same bad weather. I see. I'm from New York City, and I appreciated the express buses that took me from my neighborhood to my workplace downtown. Buses coming every few minutes means people who rely on public transportation for their livelihood can get to work on time.
When I first signed the letter opposing the bus route, it was out of respect for local businesses. Since I'm busy with other things, I thought it would be best to leave the discussion and final decision to those more knowledgeable and involved than me. As an Irvington native and local business owner myself, I want people to invest in my community and thrive. But I also didn't take the time to learn about this proposal and all its implications, consequences, and benefits.
- Do we want to hurt small businesses? Absolutely not.
- Want something that will ultimately slow down traffic so no one gets killed or injured on Washington Street? Of course.
- Do we need mass transit in our region that can get people where they need to go on time? Absolutely.
- Do you regret signing the letter before taking the time to understand the issue? Yes.
I'm no expert yet, but based on everything I finally understand, I oppose SB 52 and support a good public transit system.
