YouTube Music is preparing to add a “Trim Silence” option in a new update to enhance its podcast offering as Google Podcasts is retired.
About APK Insights: In this “APK Insight” post, we have decompiled the latest version of the application that Google has uploaded to the Play Store. When you decompile these files (called APKs for Android apps), you can see various lines of code that hint at future features. Please note that Google may or may not provide these features, and our interpretation of them may be incomplete. However, for those that are close to completion, we will try to show you what they will look like if they actually ship. Please keep that in mind as you read on.
YouTube Music wasn't originally designed as a podcasting app, but Google has rapidly built out features over the past year or so, adding much-needed features like adding podcasts via RSS and automatically downloading new episodes. I've been doing it. But still, as our guy Abner Li recently revealed, Google Podcasts is still missing a lot of podcast features despite its age.
With the latest version of YouTube Music v6.43.52, Google has established the basis for support for the “Trim Silence” feature.
This feature, available in Google Podcasts and many other podcast apps, finds silence in a podcast and automatically skips it, slightly reducing run time. I found the following string in the latest update:
trim the silence
Skip silent parts during episodes
Unfortunately, this feature is currently missing from YouTube Music. Perhaps it's a server-side component or waiting for a future app update. Either way, it's good that this is underway.
